The artist begins with traditional mandarin characters and spends considerable time in perfecting the drawing (correct brush, pressure, strokes, and fluidity of writing) well before starting painting. The art of making the calligraphy becomes second nature to the artist before beginning the study of painting.

Studying with the "masters" or famous/successful painters comes next to improve technique and style. Because of the diversity of artists’ characters and personalities, and the diversity of their skills, feelings, and aesthetics, the style of every artist varies. In their own way, each artist discards the "gross" and selects the "essential"; eliminates the "false" and keeps the "true". The artist gets in touch with the outside world and unites this with their inner world.  The artist also reads and studies the great works of the masters in the past blending all ideas  and techniques into their painting.
